Spotify has released its own audio chat app. The app, called Greenroom, is out today for Android and iOS devices. The chat app is similar to Clubhouse and allows users to broadcast live audio.
Spotify Greenroom will appear on Wednesday in 135 different countries, the company writes in a press release . It is a separate app. Greenroom is based on Locker Room, an audio chat app created by Betty Labs. That developer was acquired by Spotify in March . Locker Room was specifically for sports audio conversations, but Spotify Greenroom is becoming a more general app.
Users can use the app by logging in, logging in via their Spotify account, or creating a separate account. Each user can host a conversation themselves, or participate in another conversation. Among other things, Greenroom offers the possibility to record conversations in the app, so that users can later release these conversations as a podcast episode.
Spotify also reports that the company is releasing a creator fund this summer . This allows users to monetize their conversations. Spotify has not yet announced much about this feature. A separate creator fund page states that the amounts paid are based on, among other things, the amount of people who listen to conversations of the user in question. Payments are calculated weekly, according to Spotify.
Spotify isn’t the only company releasing a Clubhouse-style app. Facebook introduced a Clubhouse clone in April in the form of Live Audio Rooms. Twitter recently introduced a Spaces feature , which also lets users listen to some speakers. Discord also has a Clubhouse-like feature called Stage Channels these days .
