WhatsApp Introduces ‘Third-Party Chats’ Screen in iOS Beta

WhatsApp's iOS beta: Third-Party Chats section

The latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS has introduced a new feature called ‘Third-Party Chats’, aimed at enabling users to communicate with individuals on other messaging platforms directly through WhatsApp. This addition aligns with the requirements set forth by the European Digital Markets Act.

In WhatsApp beta version 2.24.2.72 for iOS, a hidden section dedicated to third-party chats has been discovered by WABetaInfo. This section is positioned at the top of the chat conversation list but requires users to manually activate the option. Users can initiate conversations with individuals on alternative chat services, such as Signal, while ensuring end-to-end encryption remains intact for these interactions.

However, the functionality is currently non-operational, as it necessitates adjustments from other platforms to enable seamless interoperability. Notably, a similar feature was previously added to an Android beta version of WhatsApp a few months ago.

While the exact timeline for the rollout of this feature to all users remains unclear, it is anticipated to be implemented before March 7, coinciding with the enforcement date of the Digital Markets Act
